Kurt Jergensen – Historic Bridge Specialist – Cultural Resources Unit

Kurt joined MassDOT in 2010 as an Architectural Historian and Bridge Historian with the Cultural Resources Unit. In his work with MassDOT, he primarily reviews Highway Division projects for the protection of historic resources and project compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 4(f) of the U.S. Department of Transportation Act, and other State and Federal historic preservation and environmental laws and regulations.  Kurt assists with reviewing design projects to ensure they meet regulatory requirements to avoid, minimize, and mitigate impacts to historically significant buildings, structures, landscapes and archaeological sites. In addition to project review, Kurt manages MassDOT’s Historic Bridge Inventory and assesses the historic significance of MassDOT bridges for eligibility on the National Register of Historic Places.

Prior to joining MassDOT, Kurt worked in cultural resources permitting with the Maine Department of Transportation. He received his master’s degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont and his bachelor’s degree in Historic Preservation from Roger Williams University.

In his free time, Kurt enjoys spending time with his family, gardening and fostering native plants, bird watching, making art, and playing tabletop roleplaying games.
