Notice of Election to Members and Retirees of the Northampton Retirement System

Election Date:

Thursday, June 11, 2026

Location:

This election will be conducted entirely by mail. 

Purpose:

The Northampton Retirement Board ("Board") is conducting a special election for one of the two elected positions to its five-member retirement board in accordance with the provisions of M.G.L. Chapter 32, 840 CMR 7.00, and the Board's supplemental election regulations.

Term of Office:

The elected member will serve for a (3) three-year term from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029.

Eligible Candidates:

Retirees and active members-in-service of the Northampton Retirement System.  Beneficiaries and Survivors are not eligible to participate in the election. Massachusetts Law (Chapter 32, Section 20, (4 7/8) Chapter 34B, Section 19) prohibits an individual who is an “employee, contractor, vendor or person receiving remuneration, financial benefit, or consideration of any kind, other than a retirement benefit or statutory stipend for serving on the retirement board, from a retirement board or from a person doing business with a retirement board” from serving on a retirement board.

Nomination Requirements:

Any retiree or active member-in-service may qualify as a candidate by filing Nomination Papers with the Northampton Retirement Office containing the signatures of at least (20) twenty active and/or retired members no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Voting Procedures:

The election will be conducted entirely by mail.  In the event of an election, ballots will be mailed to all active, inactive and retired members of the System at their last known address. A return envelope will accompany ballots.  The envelopes will include a space where the voter must write their name and provide an address.Members will be responsible for return postage. All ballots must be received by 4:30 p.m. on the day of the election.

Election by Declaration:

In the event that only one candidate is nominated, the Board will declare that candidate to be elected pursuant to Massachusetts CMR 840 Section 7.05, and no election will be held.
