PFAS Remediation Loan Program

The Massachusetts Clean Water Trust and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection are providing loans for projects that remediate PFAS in public drinking water systems to below the Maximum Contamination Level.

PFAS and Health Effects

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of chemicals that are widely used to manufacture common consumer goods and that can be found in some legacy firefighting foams. PFAS have been used in a variety of materials to make them water, oil, and stain repellant, and can be found in commercial household products, workplace electronic manufacturing, common food storage containers, and numerous other sources. PFAS have been called “forever chemicals” as they can stay in the environment for long periods and do not break down easily.

PFAS have been known to enter drinking water at sites where they were manufactured, used, disposed of, or spilled. PFAS can seep through the soil into groundwater or surface water, putting humans at risk of being exposed to PFAS by consuming contaminated drinking water. Adverse health effects in humans exposed to high levels of PFAS may include hepatic, cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, reproductive, and developmental effects.

Program Description

The Massachusetts Clean Water Trust and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection offer PFAS Remediation Loans through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) to help finance projects that address PFAS in public drinking water supplies.
