Pharmaceutical Code of Conduct - learn about data & reports

Learn more about how the Department of Public health collects and reports data for the Pharmaceutical Code of Conduct.

Disclosure report data are self-reported to the Department by registered pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers in Excel spreadsheet files, with specific formatting and data elements as required by the Department.

Manufacturers are responsible for including the correct identification numbers that correspond to the covered recipients included in disclosure reports.

Upon submission of data, the Department conducts an extensive review to detect any identifiable errors. Where identified, these errors are corrected (in conjunction with manufacturers as necessary).

Any covered recipient who believes that they (or a facility they represent) are subject to incorrect data reporting by a pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturer should initially contact the manufacturer in question. The Department will provide contact information for each registered manufacturer that submits disclosure data following a written request to pharmamedreg@massmail.state.ma.us.

Any manufacturer who believes that data reported by their company is incorrect should contact the Department. Manufacturers may also submit corrections to previous data submissions to the Department (information on this process is available on the Manufacturer's section of the program's web page).

Data available

This website currently has data reported to the Department by pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers from 2009 through 2016.

The Department collected data from the companies using the following categories:

Category Number Payment Category Name Payment Category Description
1000 Compensation for Bona Fide Services Consulting, Speaker's Bureaus, etc.
2000 CMEs, Third-party Conferences, or Meetings Payments to Covered Recipients (CRs) in Conjunction with CMEs, third-party conferences and meetings
3000 Grants/Educational Gifts Grants and Educational Gifts to CRs
4000 Food Meals Provided to CRs
5000 Education/Training Payments to CRs in Conjunction with education and training
6000 Marketing Studies Payments to CRs in conjunction with research other than genuine research
7000 Charitable Donation Donations other than donations of prescription drugs, biologics or medical devices
8000 Other Non-exempt payments to CRs of $50 or more

Please note that "payments" made to covered recipients include any fee, payment, subsidy or other economic benefit with a value of at least $50. The $50 is not a total for the year, but rather per instance. If a covered recipient received two allowable meals valued at $20 and $40, they would not be reportable. However, if a meal was valued at $60, it would be reportable. There are certain types of meals that are not allowed at all, and providing those meals would violate the code of conduct.
