QCML Criteria for Corrugated Metal Pipe Manufacturers (M5.03.0)

This criteria was qualified by MassDOT as of the date posted: September 26, 2023

For Corrugated Metal Pipe Manufacturers to be listed on the Qualified Construction Materials List (QCML), products must meet the requirements of Subsection M5.03.0 of MassDOT’s Standard Specifications, contract special provisions, and all Material and Testing Requirements outlined herein.

Material Properties

Corrugated Metal Pipe Material Properties

Corrugated Metal Pipe must meet the following material properties:

  • The metal pipe shall conform the AASHTO M 36.
    • Pipe 8 in. or less in diameter shall be constructed of sheets not less than 0.052 in. thick.
    • End Sections shall meet the following gage requirements.
      • Ends with a diameter less than or equal to 24 inches shall be 16 gage.
      • Ends a diameter of 30 to 36 inches shall be 14 gage.
      • Ends with a diameter greater than 36 inches shall be 12 gage.

Corrugated Metal Pipe Coating Material Properties

Corrugated Metal Pipe Coatings must meet the following material properties:

  • The pipe shall be coated by either galvanizing or aluminizing.
  • Galvanizing shall meet the requirements of M7.10.0 and the following:
    • ASTM A143 – Standard Practice for Safeguarding Against Embrittlement of Hot-Dip Galvanized Structural Steel Products and Procedure for Detecting Embrittlement.
    • ASTM A384 – Standard Practice for Safeguarding Against Warpage and Distortion During Hot-Dip Galvanizing of Steel Assemblies.
    • ASTM A385 – Standard Practice for Providing High-Quality Zinc Coatings (Hot-Dip).
    • ASTM B6 – Standard Specification for Zinc. A range of 0.05% to 0.09% nickel (by weight) shall be added to the galvanizing bath.
    • ASTM B695 Standard Specification for Coatings of Zinc Mechanically Deposited on Iron and Steel.
    • AASHTO M 111M/M 111 –Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products.
    • AASHTO M 232M/M 232 – Zinc Coating (Hot-Dip) on Iron and Steel Hardware.
  • Aluminizing shall meet the requirements of M7.15.0 and the following.
    • The wire used for metallizing shall be zinc or 85/15 zinc/aluminum per ASTM B833, Standard Specification for Zinc Wire for Thermal Spraying (Metallizing).

Submittal and Testing Requirements

AASHTO Product Evaluation & Audit Solutions Testing Requirements:

  • The following criteria must be met as part of the product submission.
    • Corrugated Metal Pipe Manufacturers shall be audited annually by the AASHTO Product Evaluation & Audit Solutions audit program (formerly known as NTPEP).
    • AASHTO Product Evaluation & Audit Solutions shall find that the facility is in compliance with the Corrugated Metal Pipe Work Plan.

Product Listing, Expiration, and Re-Approval

Once approved, the Corrugated Metal Pipe Manufacturer will be listed on the MassDOT QCML. The Manufacturer's facility shall remain on the approved list unless one of the following occurs:

  • If the Corrugated Metal Pipe Manufacturer is not audited by AASHTO Product Evaluation & Audit Solutions on the most recent audit cycle in accordance with the Corrugated Metal Pipe Work Plan.
  • If the Manufacturer no longer meets the minimum requirements of the AASHTO Product Evaluation & Audit Solutions Corrugated Metal Pipe Work Plan. 
  • MassDOT RMS determines that the Manufacturer or their products no longer meet the minimum requirements of the Standard Specifications.
