QCML Criteria for Mechanical Reinforcing Bar Splicer Coated..(M8.01.9)

For Mechanical Reinforcing Bar Splicer Coated and Uncoated to be listed on the Qualified Construction Materials List (QCML), a product must meet the requirements of Subsection M8.01.9 of MassDOT’s Standard Specifications including all Material and Testing Requirements outlined herein.

Material Properties

Mechanical Reinforcing Bar Splicer Coated and Uncoated must meet the requirements of Subsection M8.01.9 as well as the following properties:

  • AASHTO M31

Mechanical splicer coating shall be in conformance with the following:

  • M8.01.7: Epoxy Coated Reinforcing Bars
  • M8.01.8: Galvanized Reinforcing Bars

Damage to the mechanical reinforcing bar splicer coating shall be repaired with the following

  • 2024 Construction Details II: 901.62: Reinforcement 

Submittal and Testing Requirements

A manufacturer requesting approval of Mechanical Reinforcing Bar Splicer Coated and Uncoated shall furnish to MassDOT RMS the following:

  • If required, the material specifications and performance data for their product as specified under the MassDOT Testing Requirements sections shown below.

All submittals shall be certified to be in conformance with the manufacturer's instructions. Mechanical Reinforcing Bar Splicer Coated and Uncoated qualified by MassDOT per the performance criteria shall be considered for placement on the MassDOT QCML. 

MassDOT Testing Requirements:

The following criteria must be met, for coated and uncoated products, as part of the product submission:

  • The manufacturer must certify that the product is in accordance with M8.01.9.
  • Mill certifications associated with each rebar submitted.
  • Three uncoated/coated samples for each size, all assembled with a 36", grade 60 rebars.
  • 36" of bar on each side (72" total length) with #6 control bars half that length.
  • Three 36", grade 60, uncoated/coated #6 control bar samples for each size. 

QCML Listing, Expiration, and Re-Qualification

Once qualified, the Mechanical Reinforcing Bar Splicer Coated and Uncoated product will be listed on the MassDOT QCML. The product shall remain on the qualified list for five (5) years unless one of the following occurs:

  • MassDOT RMS determines that the product no longer meets the minimum requirements. 

A written request for re-qualification must be submitted to the Department at least 60 days prior to the expiration date to remain on the QCML.
