QCML Criteria for Pavement Joint Adhesives

This criteria was qualified by MassDOT as of the date posted: July 19, 2024

For a Pavement Joint Adhesive to be listed on the Qualified Construction Materials List (QCML), a product must be evaluated by MassDOT Research and Materials Section (RMS) and meet the requirements of Subsections M3.05.0 & M3.05.4 of MassDOT’s Standard Specifications including all Material and Testing Requirements outlined herein.

Material Properties

The material shall be a hot applied asphaltic product designed to adhere and seal HMA construction joints.

The manufacturer of the Pavement Joint Adhesives must certify that the product is in accordance with Subsections M3.05.0 & M3.05.4 of MassDOT’s Standard Specifications.

Submittal and Testing Requirements

A manufacturer requesting approval of Pavement Joint Adhesives shall furnish to MassDOT RMS the following:

  • All current product literature, including technical data sheets (TDS) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • All testing shall be performed by one independent lab unless approved by the Engineer. Independent test reports must be dated within two years from the initial submission.

All submittals shall be certified to be in conformance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Pavement Joint Adhesives qualified by MassDOT per the performance criteria shall be considered for placement on the MassDOT QCML.

MassDOT Testing Requirements:

  • Manufacturers shall submit certified laboratory tests to MassDOT RMS. Test results shall show that the product meets the requirements of Table M3.05.4-1.

Product Listing, Expiration, and Re-Approval

Once approved, the Joint Adhesive will be listed on the MassDOT QCML. The product shall remain on the approved list for five (5) years unless one of the following occurs:

  • If the manufacturer does not have the product reevaluated.
  • If the product’s technology changes.
    • If the product formulation or technology changes, the manufacturer shall notify MassDOT RMS.
  • MassDOT RMS determines that the product no longer meets the minimum requirements.

A written request for re-approval must be submitted to the Department at least 60 days prior to the expiration date for the product to remain on the QCML.
