Robert J. Smith was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 15, 1950 to Judy Smith and George Stone, though he was raised by his beloved paternal grandmother Sally Smith. Robert, or 'Bobby' as he was known to most, loved to smile and he loved to make other people smile. Bobby absolutely loved his family and the importance of family closeness remained a constant in his life.
In the early 1970's Robert Smith married Denise H. Singleton. The couple had a young son who they named Keri and although he did not share his father's name, Robert affectionately nicknamed him "Junior". Unfortunately, the married couple separated by the late 70's but remained close friends until his death in 1996.
In 1986, Robert fathered another son who he named Marcus. Marcus shared his father's magnetic smile and was doted on by both Robert and his mother Patricia Copeland.
Robert Smith always put his family first and family often included close friends who were not necessarily blood related. He was immensely close to his siblings Abdul Majid Muhammed and his sister Letitia Stone as well as his numerous cousins including Steven Smith, Kevin Smith, Linda Smith, Louis Grimes, and Roy Cannie. His sons Keri and Marcus meant the world to him and they remained close to him for the rest of his life. Robert constantly impressed upon the importance of family connectivity to his two sons who are now both successful entrepreneurs living in New York City (Keri) and Cambridge (Marcus).
