Scientific diving project

Find out about our scientific diving project and how it assists our understanding of life underwater.

About the scientific diving project

The MarineFisheries Scientific Diving Project helps with oceanic research efforts. We updated our Scientific Diving Policy to follow the scientific diving exemption from the OSHA commercial diving standards. This ensures that our work underwater is safe. Trained divers working within a variety of Division programs oversee our projects. A dive safety officer administers each project.

Research and collaborative projects supported by the scientific diving project include:

  • Artificial reef construction and monitoring
  • Eelgrass restoration and monitoring
  • Habitat mapping
  • Lobster population studies
  • Shellfish population and habitat monitoring
  • Tagging and temperature instrument placement
  • Whale-safe neutral buoy line research
