About the scientific diving project

The MarineFisheries Scientific Diving Project aids in the Division’s oceanic research efforts. Our Scientific Diving Policy is compliant with the scientific diving exemption from OSHA commercial diving standards. Our policy’s standards manage risk our diving operations, making our underwater work as safe as possible. Trained divers working within a variety of Division programs oversee our projects. A dive safety officer administers each project.

Research and collaborative projects supported by the scientific diving project include:

  • Artificial reef construction and monitoring
  • Eelgrass monitoring and restoration
  • Habitat mapping
  • Lobster population studies
  • Shellfish population and habitat monitoring
  • Scientific instrument placement (bottom temperature monitors and acoustic receivers)
  • Organism collection
