Mission Statement
The Statewide Advisory Council (SAC) of the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) is dedicated to providing guidance, support, and advocacy for the Deaf and hard-of- hearing community in Massachusetts. the Statewide Advisory Council's overarching commitment is to promote access, equity, and inclusion, thereby enhancing the quality of life for individuals in these communities.
Overview
The SAC members are appointed by the governor, comprising individuals representing various aspects of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities, including service providers, educators, advocates, and community members. We work collaboratively with MCDHH, local organizations, stakeholders, and other councils to address issues, share resources, and develop initiatives that foster better communication access, services, and improved programs for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
Key Responsibilities
- Advisory Role: Offer insights and recommendations to MCDHH on policies, programs, and services impacting the Deaf and hard-of- hearing communities.
- Advocacy: Act as a voice for the community, advocating for improved resources, accessibility, and support services.
- Community Engagement: Facilitate outreach efforts to engage community members and gather feedback on their needs and concerns.
- Education and Awareness: Promote awareness of Deaf culture and the challenges faced by individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
- Collaboration: Work with local organizations, stakeholders, and other councils to enhance service delivery and community support.
Meeting Schedule
The SAC meets at least eight times annually to discuss current issues, plan initiatives, and review progress. Meetings are open to the public and allow community members to participate in discussions and share their insights.
