Temporary U-turn to Close, Permanent U-turn to be Established

On 4/22/24, MassDOT is scheduled to permanently close the temporary U-turn and cross walk currently in place between The Cove restaurant and Senator Thomas Norton City Pier. This will be replaced by the permanent U-turn and crosswalk configuration located approximately 100 feet to the south. Motorists will be directed to utilize the new U-turn.

Traffic Shifts Near the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge

On 4/22/24, to facilitate work at the proposed intersection at Brightman Street and Route 79 Southbound, traffic on the Rt. 6 Eastbound/Rt. 79 Southbound ramp from the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge will shift slightly to the east. Further, traffic on Rt. 79 Southbound passing under the Rt. 6 Eastbound/Rt. 79 Southbound ramp from the Veterans’ Memorial Bridge will shift slightly to the west.

Reconfiguration of the Intersection of President Avenue and Davol Street Northbound

To accommodate essential utility work in the area, the intersection of President Avenue and Davol Street northbound will be temporarily reconfigured beginning April 22. The temporary reconfiguration will remain for approximately 4 months.

Lane Shifts on Route 79/Davol Street Southbound Senator Thomas Norton City Pier

MassDOT is scheduled to revert traffic on Davol Street southbound near the Senator Thomas Norton City Pier to its normal pattern. Previously, traffic had been shifted to the east to accommodate construction work.

Brownell Street to be Reduced to Single Lane Traffic Starting December 9

To accommodate ongoing utility installation, Brownell Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for approximately 4 weeks beginning Saturday December 9. A police detail will be onsite to facilitate two-way alternating traffic on Brownell Street.

Lane Shifts on Route 79/Davol Street Southbound and Brownell Street (in the vicinity of Commonwealth Landing)

MassDOT is temporarily shifting traffic to accommodate vital construction work on Route 79/Davol Street southbound. Construction work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Pedestrian detours will be in place 24 hours a day.

Near Brownell Street

To accommodate work at the intersection of Davol Street southbound and Brownell Street (in the vicinity of Commonwealth Landing), both lanes of traffic on Route 79/Davol Street southbound in the vicinity of Brownell Street will be shifted to the left before commuters revert to Route 79/Davol Street southbound to continue their journey. These shifts began on Monday, October 23.

Construction on Brownell Street

Crews on Brownell Street and Remington Avenue began culvert work during the week of June 12. This work is continuing and will be carried out over the course of approximately twelve weeks. Construction work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Access to properties will be maintained at all times. Brownell Street and Remington Avenue on the west side of Davol Street will become one-way with alternating traffic and the roadway will re-open all lanes in the evenings.


Permanent Closure of Route 79 Northbound and Southbound from Veterans’ Memorial Bridge

The high-speed expressway of Route 79 northbound and southbound from Veterans’ Memorial Bridge to the Fall River Heritage State Park has been permanently closed.

Northbound and southbound Route 79 traffic has been permanently routed to the current Davol Street on either side of the expressway. All local roadway and Route 79 through movement connections will be maintained through this route using Davol Street. Route 79 drivers are advised that the speed limit on Davol Street is 30 mph and to observe local traffic regulations. Alternatively, drivers may use Route 24 for direct travel between Route 79 and I-195.

In addition to the closure of the Route 79 expressway, the U-turn bridge at Brightman Street has been permanently closed. This movement has been replaced with a U-turn from Davol Street northbound to southbound, located at the existing Cory Street underpass/ U-turn.

Detours will be in place for demolition of the bridges for Route 79 over the southern U-turn, President Avenue, and Cory Street U-turn. Only one cross street detour will occur at a time. More detailed detour routes are described below. 


Detour Routes 

All detour routes and other traffic changes will be clearly signed and marked.

*Short-term daily detours of the Cory Street U-Turn will continue as needed as the work progresses. Detours will occur during work hours and traffic patterns will be restored at the end of the working day.

Vehicles seeking to use cross-streets should utilize the following detours:

Southern U Turn

  •  Davol Street southbound to Davol Street northbound:
    • Continue southbound to take the temporary southern U-turn.
    • Take the left turn onto the temporary U-turn roadway and merge onto Davol Street northbound.
    • Proceed to your destination.
  • Davol Street northbound to Davol Street southbound:
    • Proceed north to President Avenue
    • Take the left turn onto President Avenue
    • Turn Left onto Davol Street southbound.
    • Proceed to your destination.

Pedestrians should continue to use temporary crossings on Route 79/Davol North and Southbound. Additional signage and markings will be provided to ensure pedestrian safety during construction.

Cory Street (U-turn)

  • Davol Street northbound to Davol Street southbound:
    • Proceed to the North Main Street Exit.
    • Turn left on North Main and take on-ramp to Route 79 South.
    • Merge onto Davol Street southbound.
    • Proceed on Davol Street southbound.
    • Continue to your destination.
  • Davol Street southbound to Davol Street northbound:
    • Proceed south on Davol Street.
    • Turn left onto President Avenue.
    • Turn left again onto Davol Street northbound.
    • Continue to your destination.

Pedestrians and bicyclists seeking to use cross-streets should utilize the following detours:

Cory Street (U-turn)

  • Davol Street northbound to Davol Street southbound:
    • When heading west on Cory Street, take a left and head south.
    • Continue along existing pedestrian crossings to President Avenue.
    • Cross Davol Street northbound and southbound at the pedestrian crossing.
    • Head north on Davol southbound to Cory Street.
    • Continue to your destination.
  • Davol Street southbound to Davol Street northbound:
    • When heading east on Cory Street, take a right and head south.
    • Continue along existing pedestrian crossings to President Avenue.
    • Cross Davol Street southbound and northbound at the pedestrian crossing.
    • Head north on Davol northbound to Cory Street.
    • Continue to your destination.
