Underside of the bridge – May – October 2025
Construction work on the underside (substructure) of the bridge began on May 4, 2025 and will continue through October 2025. The following travel impacts will be implemented:
- Overnight single lane closures on Route 1A Northbound at Callahan Tunnel approach (Sunday through Thursday) throughout the project
- Overnight closures of the Callahan Tunnel will take place the following nights from 11:00 pm each night to 5:00 am the following morning, with signage and law enforcement to guide drivers through the work area:
- Wednesday, September 3, and Thursday, September 4
Roadway and sidewalks fully reopened
On the evening of Tuesday, August 26, crews completed paving operations on Richmond Street, allowing the roadway and sidewalks to fully reopen for Full Beneficial Use. This concludes the major roadway work on the surface of the Richmond Street Bridge.
Some minor work, such as fence construction and asphalt sealing, will remain. This work may require occasional sidewalk closures or temporary traffic shifts as needed.
Stage 1 construction – COMPLETE
This stage is complete. Crews carried out various bridge and roadway repairs.
Stage 2 construction - COMPLETE
This stage is complete. Crews carried out various bridge and roadway repairs, sidewalk replacement, and installed new bridge railings.
Construction work hours
Crews will work as follows:
- Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. for bridge surface and roadway work
- Sunday – Thursday, 9 p.m. each night – 5:00 a.m. the following morning for concrete repairs on the underside of the bridge
