Traffic and construction updates - Cambridge - Alewife Brook Parkway Bridge Superstructure replacement

Construction will require temporary changes to traffic patterns, pedestrian routes, and bicycle access within project area.

Expected impacts include:

• The sidewalk on the bridge is anticipated to be closed for the duration of the project.
• The bicycle network under the bridge will be temporarily closed during: 
  • A few periodic weekdays between August 2026 and Fall 2026 to install a temporary utility structure adjacent to the bridge
  • Two non-consecutive weekend construction periods in Spring/Summer 2027 
  • Advance notice of upcoming closures will be distributed and posted online
• Temporary pedestrian and bicycle detours will be in place during all closures.
• Access to the MBTA Alewife station and parking garage will be maintained at all times, and MBTA Red Line service will not be impacted. 
• Periodic single-lane closures on Alewife Brook Parkway will occur as needed during construction.

Initial work activities

• Installing erosion/sedimentation controls, tree protection, and tree trimming
• installing temporary shoring
• Installing temporary utility bridge and temporary gas main
• Installing overhang brackets
• Removing and resetting lighting
• Saw cutting abutments
