Status
Project construction continues on the I-495/I-90 Improvements project. The following activities are underway:
Ramp from I-495 South to I-90 East and West (Exit 58)
- The new temporary ramp from I-495 Southbound to I-90 Eastbound and Westbound (Exit 58) is scheduled to open on July 10, 2026. In the event of inclement weather, the ramp will instead open on July 11, 2026. View a map of the temporary ramp (Exit 58).
- Prior to the opening, the ramp from I-495 Southbound to I-90 Eastbound and Westbound (Exit 58) will be temporarily closed between 11:00 PM on Thursday, July 9 until 5:00 AM on July 10. While the closure is in effect, travelers on I-495 Southbound should use the following detour route to access I-90:
- Take Exit 54A (West Main Street Hopkinton) to reverse direction back onto I-495 northbound, then take Exit 58 (I-90 Eastbound and Westbound)
Overnight Ramp Closures at I-495/I-90 Interchange
- The I-495 southbound ramp to I-90 East and West (Exit 58) will be closed from 11:00 PM on Tuesday, July 14, until 5:00 AM the following morning.
- During this overnight closure, the following detour will be in place: Use Exit 54A (West Main Street in Hopkinton), to reverse direction back to I-495 northbound. Then take Exit 58 to access I-90 East or West.
In the event of inclement weather, this ramp closure will be pushed back to the evening of Wednesday, July 15.
Flanders Road Daytime Closure and Detour
MassDOT will temporarily close Flanders Road in Westborough from Washington Street to Connector Road on Saturday, July 18 during daytime hours, from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The closure is necessary for crews to demolish a section of the I-495 Northbound bridge over Flanders Road. The demolition activities are anticipated to occur between approximately 6:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
As a part of the demolition, there will be lane closures on I-495 North from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 18. At least one lane of traffic will remain open at all times. A detour and signage will be in place to help drivers navigate the closure.

Ramp from I-90 Westbound to I-495 Southbound
The new ramp connection from I-90 Westbound to I-495 Southbound is now open. Motorists on I-90 westbound will now have two exits to access I-495. The first exit will be for I-495 Southbound (Exit 106A), while the second exit will be for I-495 Northbound (Exit 106B). You can view the new alignment on this map.
I-90 Eastbound Lane Shift
In July 2025, traffic on I-90 Eastbound was shifted from the previous alignment on the existing Whitehall Brook bridge to the south to facilitate the continued reconstruction of the Whitehall Brook bridge. Upon the completion of I-90 over MBTA Railroad phase 2, traffic on I-90 East will be shifted onto a different alignment extending the I-495/90 bridge to the Flanders Road bridge.
I-495 Northbound Lane Shift
The lane shift implemented around the work zone on I-495 northbound in December 2025 was removed in July 2026 and returned back to regular lane traffic.
Overnight Lane Closures on I-90 and I-495
- Lane closures are ongoing during overnight hours. At least one lane in each direction on both I-495 and I-90 will remain open at all times.
Fruit Street Bridge
- Phase 1 of the construction of the Fruit Street Bridge was completed in 2024. Phase 2 of the Fruit Street Bridge construction process began in Summer 2024 and concluded in Fall 2025.
- Two-way traffic on Fruit Street reopened on December 11, 2025. Some bridge and sidewalk work is ongoing and is projected to be completed by Fall 2026.
Ramp from I-90 Westbound to I-495 Northbound
- Construction of the ramp deck, barrier, lighting, fencing and retaining walls is ongoing.
- The new ramp from I-90 Westbound to I-495 Northbound is anticipated to open in Summer 2026.
I-90 Construction
- Phase 1 of the 90 over Railroad Bridge structure is complete and the Design Build Team has progressed to the Phase 2 along the westbound shoulder. Westbound traffic on I-90 is anticipated to shift to the new Railroad Bridge structure in Summer 2026.
- Work over Whitehall Brook is ongoing. Phase 1 is complete. Traffic on I-90 westbound was shifted as part of Phase 2 in Fall 2025. Phase 2 is projected to be completed by Summer 2026. Phase 3, when traffic will shift to the median, will begin after the conclusion of Phase 2.
- The widening of the eastbound shoulder from Whitehall to the toll plaza is complete.
Old Toll Plaza/Ramp from I-90 East to I-495 North
- Installation of the culvert and I-90 eastbound to I-495 northbound substructure is ongoing and will continue through the end of the project.
I-495 Traffic Crossover
- The project team has completed the 495 over Railroad superstructure and is completing barrier and pavement installation in support of the future Southbound traffic shift.
- The project team anticipates opening Exit 58 (from I-495 to I-90 Westbound) the week of July 6, 2026. After Exit 58 is opened, I-495 Southbound traffic will be shifted out of the crossover to its final location. Additionally, I-495 Northbound traffic will be shifted into the crossover through Fall 2026.
Flanders Road Bridge
- Phase 1 of Flanders Road bridge construction was completed and opened in Fall 2024.
- Phase 2 substructure work is complete. The superstructure work is ongoing and is projected to be completed by Summer 2026.
Ramp from 495 North and South to I-90 West (Exit 58)
- Work has commenced on the permanent retaining wall along the northbound shoulder
- During the second stage of work on the bridge that carries I-90 over the Whitehall Brook, the ramps from I-495 northbound and southbound to I-90 westbound (Exit 58) will be reduced from two lanes to one lane through Summer 2026. The project team anticipates opening the new Exit 58 (from I-495 to I-90 Westbound) in Summer 2026.
- Approximately four weeks after new Exit 58 opens, the I-495 southbound alignment will shift to the new structure.
Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
Traffic and staging considerations
The project will involve complete replacement of the interchange. To avoid traffic impacts, the project will:
- Maintain 3 lanes on mainlines, except for short-term closures during approved off-peak hours
- Maintain all ramp connections between I-90 and I-495, including along temporary alignments
- Maintain proper signage and markings
- Provide temporary roadway lighting along ramps for safe nighttime travel
- Provision of safe construction access/egress
- Maintain resident and local business access/egress
