Construction activities are in progress. Weather and unexpected circumstances make all construction activities subject to change without notice, but we will do our best to keep you updated.
Lombardi Street Construction (August 18, 2025 – Winter 2025/2026)
While crews carry out work on the Maffa Way and Mystic Avenue bridges, improvements to transit, bicycle, and pedestrian accommodations will also be made on the following roadways:
- Lombardi Street between Broadway and Mystic Avenue
- Broadway and Maffa Way between Lombardi Street and Sullivan Square Station
- A new pedestrian and bicycle crossing between Sullivan Square Station and Mystic Avenue
Crews will begin construction on the roadways listed above the week of August 18. Work will typically occur during daytime hours, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM. In order for crews to perform this work, traffic will be shifted and occasional lane closures will be implemented primarily on Lombardi Street, with some additional lane closures on Broadway, Maffa Way, and Mystic Avenue. These daytime traffic impacts will occur between the hours of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM to not interfere with rush hour travel times.
Occasional work and lane reductions will be implemented during overnight hours, from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. There are no anticipated vehicular detours as part of this work.
Lombardi Street work is anticipated to be completed in Winter 2025/2026 along with the bridge replacement work, with minor landscaping work to be completed in Spring 2026.
Parking impacts beginning Fall 2025
In order to accommodate the new bus-and-bike-only lane on Broadway, the remaining on-street parking spaces on Broadway between Mt. Vernon Street and Caldwell Street will be removed. The parking spaces will be removed beginning in the fall as crews carry out repaving work along Broadway. Additional notice will be given before this work begins.
Phase II Traffic and Construction (January 2025 – Winter 2025/2026)
Phase II of the project began in January 2025 and includes the replacement of the south side of the Maffa Way Bridge and the north side of the Mystic Avenue Bridge. MassDOT implemented traffic shifts on both the Maffa Way Bridge and the Mystic Avenue Bridge in January 2025 to accommodate Phase II construction.
On Mystic Avenue, two lanes of traffic are shifted to the newly constructed south side of the bridge. On Maffa Way, two lanes of traffic are shifted onto the newly constructed north side of the bridge. One lane from Broadway in Somerville and one lane from the I-93 ramp will be maintained. Pedestrian access will be maintained across the bridge.
On the Maffa Way Bridge, vehicular travel is reduced to two lanes and the south side of the bridge is closed for construction.
On the Mystic Avenue Bridge, vehicular travel is reduced to two lanes and the north side of the bridge is closed for construction.
Vehicular and Pedestrian Detours for Phase II
In order to establish the work zones for Phase II, the following local detours were implemented in January 2025 and anticipated to remain in place through January 2026. Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work areas.
