ADA at 30: Audits Improving Access for People with Disabilities

Our audits have worked to ensure government meets its responsibilities to people with disabilities.

In 2020, we're celebrating 30 years since the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed in to law, expanding opportunity and access for people with disabilities. Through our audits, we ensure state government lives up to its responsibilities to maintain a climate that is inclusionary and accessible.

Audit of the Human Resources Division 

The audit calls on HRD hold agencies more accountable for submitting and meeting diversity and affirmative action plans, that include efforts to recruit people with disabilities to work in state government.

Audit of the University of Massachusetts Amherst 

The audit recommends UMass Amherst takes steps to develop action plans to ensure the safety of students with disabilities in the event of a fire or other emergency.. It also calls on the school to make improvements to its process for resolving grievances involving students with disabilities.

Audit of Greenfield Community College 

After the audit found emergency evacuation plans did not take into consideration the needs of students with disabilities in the event of an emergency that requires an evacuation.

Audit of the Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission 

The audit found PERAC did not review all calculations from local retirement boards for public employees applying for disability retirement benefits. As a a result, inaccurate payments could be sent.

Audit of the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind 

The audit calls on MCB to enhance its case-management system to identify vocation rehabilitation client records to include race information and to develop a way to track informal complaints it received from clients or constituents.

Audit of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services—Barriers to Access to Public Benefits 

The audit calls upon the Department of Public Health, which oversees the WIC nutrition program, to clearly identify provider locations that are wheelchair accessible on its website, and periodically check the accuracy of this information.
