MassDOT Aeronautics Drone Operations Program

Employing Unmanned Aerial Systems to support state and local agencies, municipalities, and quasi-governmental entities across the Commonwealth.

The Drone Operations Program uses Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS, or “drones”) to further the work of MassDOT and the MBTA across the Commonwealth. The Drone Operations Program is guiding adoption of drone technology within MassDOT and the MBTA in a manner that is safe, cost-effective, and secure. In addition, the Drone Operations Program is incentivizing applied research across Massachusetts for economic development and is integrating drones into the National Airspace System.

To these ends, the Drone Operations Program also partners with the MassDOT Aeronautics’ Data and Analytics Team, leveraging data scientists and analysts to turn collected drone imagery into useful data and actionable information for public transportation stakeholders and decision-makers, and to plan information technology infrastructure for large-scale projects. The Program also promotes the collection, analysis, and sharing of data.
