Boston — State Auditor Suzanne M. Bump announced today that Timothy Dooling has joined her staff as Deputy Auditor and General Counsel for the Office of the State Auditor (OSA). He joins Bump’s senior leadership team and will represent her office in legal proceedings, provide legal research for audits, and assist in development of legislation and legal policy. He will also oversee the Bureau of Special Investigations, which is charged with detecting and preventing fraud within public assistance programs, and the Division of Local Mandates, a resource for communities seeking to determine if they have been subjected to an unfunded state mandate.

Most recently, Dooling was the Deputy Director and General Counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Career Services. His previous public service includes serving as Chief Legal Counsel at the state Parole Board, Assistant General Counsel at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, and as a prosecutor at the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst and a Juris Doctorate from New England Law  Boston.

“Tim is a dynamic lawyer and government administrator. He possesses the intimate knowledge of state government operations that the job requires, as well as the qualities of professionalism and collaboration that I require,” said Bump.

Dooling fills the position previously held by Gerry McDonough. McDonough retired from state service in January after five years with the OSA, helping to guide its transformation into a 21st century government auditing agency. Prior to joining the OSA, McDonough served as General Counsel for the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development for four years and has held other posts throughout state government during his more than two decades of public service. McDonough will continue to work on legal and policy matters through his new endeavor – Alewife Consulting Group.
