Media Contact for Auditor Bump Commemorates Former Massachusetts Governor Oliver Ames
Noah Futterman
Boston — Today, State Auditor Suzanne M. Bump, along with members of the Ames family, unveiled a restored portrait of former Governor Oliver Ames at a ceremony in the State House. Ames, a native of the Town of Easton, where Bump currently lives, served as governor from 1887 to 1890.
After moving to Easton in 2017, Bump learned that the Ames portrait was not being displayed in the State House out of concern that its frame could be easily damaged. Bump worked with the Bureau of the State House on behalf of the Ames family to restore the portrait and install protective plexiglass to prevent future damage.
Governor Charlie Baker joined Auditor Bump in her office at the State House to greet the Ames family following the unveiling of the portrait.
State Senator Walter F. Timilty, State Senator Michael D. Brady, State Representative Gerard J. Cassidy, and Chairwoman Dottie Fulginiti of the Easton Select Board were also in attendance.
The Massachusetts State Library also displayed artifacts and memorabilia from the Ames-era throughout the day.
