John Turner, Chief Probation Officer of the Boston Municipal Court – Central Division, was honored with the John Augustus Leadership Award by the Massachusetts Chief Probation Officers Association at the group’s annual Spring Conference which was held at the Lakeview Pavilion in Foxboro on May 15, 2025.

The John Augustus Leadership Award recognizes outstanding leadership and dedication to the field of probation, according to Matthew “Matt” McDonough, CPO of the East Boston Division of the BMC.

“Chief Turner’s work exemplifies both leadership and dedication. He is a renowned historian of the Massachusetts Probation Service. He has not only studied but also embraced the legacy of John Augustus, the ‘Father of Probation.’ CPO Turner has modeled his mission and management style on Augustus’ pioneering approach to probation reform and rehabilitation,” said CPO McDonough.

He added, “CPO John Turner’s commitment to innovation, public service, and historical integrity makes him a standout leader in the Massachusetts Probation Service.”
