District Attorney Harrington at BART Charter Public School

AdamsBerkshire District Attorney Andrea Harrington told a packed auditorium of students on Thursday that leadership requires sticking to your values, doing the right thing and treating people fairly.

Speaking at an International Women’s Day event at the Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter Public School in Adams, the District Attorney discussed how women that run for public office are often held to higher standards. Sitting beside Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer, DA Harrington said she welcomed the challenge. She also answered questions from students about criminal justice reform, the death penalty and her expectations of herself and the office staff.

“This is what we say in my office all the time, every day: We are going to do the right thing, and it comes down to a personal moral compass and what the values of my office are. So for me, my first big expectation of myself and my team is to do the right thing in every decision that we make. I would say the second most important expectation that I have of myself is that we treat everybody fairly who comes before our office irrespective of their gender, their race, their social economic status, who their family was, who they know, or who they don’t know.”

DA Harrington said she was philosophically opposed to the death penalty and would use her power as a prosecutor to pursue justice with integrity. Part of doing the right thing involves not prosecuting unjust cases. As District Attorney Harrington said recently, “Our job is not just to win cases, but to win cases when appropriate, to divert cases when appropriate, to reject cases when they can’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”
