Saugus, MAThe Essex District Attorney’s Office and the Essex State Police Detective Unit are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Saugus.

At approximately 4:32 pm on Saturday, three Saugus Police officers responded to 3 Alfred Road for a request for assistance with a female family member in distress.  Upon arrival, the officers entered the residence and were confronted by a 38-year old woman, identified as Stephanie Gerardi, brandishing a knife.  One of the officers fired his duty weapon three times, striking her.  The officers immediately rendered aid.  EMS was also on scene, due to the nature of the call, and provided aid.  She was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The officers were uninjured but taken to local hospital as a precaution.  The officer who fired his duty weapon has been place on administrative leave per department policy.

Upon completion of the investigation, the Essex District Attorney’s Office will release its findings to the public.
