Boston, MA — The Executive Office of Veterans Services (EOVS) has announced that the Massachusetts Veterans Home at Chelsea (CHE) was awarded licensure by the Department of Public Health (DPH) and certification by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), a top priority of the Healey-Driscoll Administration signifying an important milestone in the state's commitment to delivering top-tier care for its veterans.

The first 20 residents transitioned into the building today. The move-in process included various activities, including a special luncheon and engagement with families, residents, staff, volunteers, and a visit from EOVS Secretary Jon Santiago.

In compliance with the Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 144 of the Acts of 2022, which mandates the licensing of Veterans Homes as nursing homes, CHE has obtained licensure as a skilled nursing facility from DPH this week for the newly constructed Veterans Home at Chelsea. This achievement has enabled the facility to attain the status of a Medicare-certified nursing home.

"Today represents the start of a new chapter when it comes to providing exceptional long-term care for our Massachusetts veterans," stated Secretary Jon Santiago. "Our cutting-edge facility represents a pivotal juncture in our ongoing mission to honor our veterans through top-tier care and support. As we prepare to expand our services to additional residents and staff, I’m grateful for the dedication of the Chelsea Board of Trustees and the collaborative efforts of our frontline workers in housekeeping, dietary, and nursing."

Located atop Chelsea’s historic Powder Horn Hill, the Community Living Center (CLC) at the Veterans Home at Chelsea embodies the Commonwealth's unwavering dedication to veterans' well-being. Meeting the highest federal VA standards for Community Living Centers, this 154-bed facility features an environmentally conscious and resilient architectural model in line with the state's energy reduction objectives. Emphasizing natural lighting and panoramic views of downtown Boston and the harbor, it fosters a nurturing and dignified living environment, fostering a home-like atmosphere that prioritizes individual privacy and autonomy while promoting a sense of community through shared living spaces and support areas. Additionally, the project aligns with the state's broader sustainability goals, aiming to attain LEED Platinum and Zero Net Energy certifications.

“The new facility embodies the collective dreams and efforts of our veteran community, with support from dedicated staff and visionary leadership. It marks the beginning of our next chapter in delivering exceptional veteran care,” stated Robert Engell, Executive Director of Veterans’ Homes and Housing

The forthcoming VA recognition survey, integral to the facility's future operations, signifies the next step toward a fully operational CLC.
