The Operational Services Division (OSD) is pleased to provide the Environmentally Preferable Products (EPP) Procurement Program Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2023, summarizing the Operational Services Division’s (OSD) efforts to increase the availability of environmentally and climate-preferable products and services to public buyers and to promote their use. Today, OSD offers more than 100 Statewide Contracts, with 56 providing environmental and climate specifications, and numerous FY24 initiatives are underway to boost sustainable options through our contracts.
As stipulated in Executive Order 515, the EPP Procurement Program aims to reduce the environmental impacts of state government. In FY23, the program calculated $327M in Statewide Contract environmental and climate preferable purchases, which also includes diverting an estimated 105,895 tons of waste to recycling, $3.5M in annual savings from energy-efficient choices, and a reduction of 78,618 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
In addition to providing summary achievements, the FY23 Annual Report details program collaborations to further decarbonize our contracts in support of EO 594, initiatives to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals, efforts to refine environmental purchasing data collected from Statewide Contract Vendors, as well as program outreach and acknowledgments. A preview of FY24 initiatives includes working with Sourcing teams to continue integrating environmental specifications into Statewide Contract Bids, improving environmental claim verification, and exploring AI modeling to identify environmental purchases.
