Boston — The State Ethics Commission mourns the passing of former Commission Chair George D. Brown, who died March 12. Chair Brown was appointed to the Commission and named as its chair by Governor William Weld in 1994 and served until 1998.

For more than 50 years, Chair Brown was a professor at Boston College School of Law, serving as interim dean from 2010 to 2011, then continuing to serve as professor emeritus following his retirement in 2021. He previously served as an assistant attorney general under Massachusetts Attorney General Elliot Richardson and as his legislative assistant. He was also a legislative counsel to U.S. Senator Charles Mathias and a legislative assistant to Governor Francis Sargent. Throughout his academic career, Chair Brown authored dozens of scholarly articles, many focusing on federal-state relations and government ethics.

An article on Chair Brown’s distinguished career is available in the Boston College Law School Magazine.
