Boston — In her third State of the Commonwealth address tonight, Governor Maura Healey announced that she is working with the City of Worcester to create a Bob Cousy Pass in honor of the Celtics legend. Governor Healey and the City are working to rename the I-290 bridge over Southbridge Street.

“Last year, we unveiled the brand-new Bill Russell Bridge in Boston,” said Governor Healey. “This year, we’ll honor another Celtics legend when we dedicate the new Bob Cousy Pass in his hometown of Worcester. Cooz, I know you’re watching at home. I can’t wait to see you and take a ride together.”

Bob Cousy was the star point guard for the Boston Celtics from 1957-1963, winning six championships, including five consecutive. He led the NBA in assists for eight consecutive years, played in 13 straight All Star games, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971. Before joining the NBA, he was an All-American at Holy Cross University, and now lives in Worcester. Cousy is Governor Healey’s all-time favorite player, as she wore #14 throughout her own basketball career in his honor, and the two have had a close friendship for many years.

Last year, Governor Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu renamed the North Washington Street Bridge as the William Felton ‘Bill’ Russell Bridge in honor of the civil rights activist and Celtics legend who passed away in 2022.
