Boston — In her third State of the Commonwealth Address tonight, Governor Maura Healey announced that in her FY27 budget, she will propose requiring companies to make it just as easy to cancel a monthly subscription as it is to sign up for one. Too often, companies will make it as easy as clicking one button to sign up for a monthly subscription, but force customers to jump through hoops to cancel it. This action will help protect Massachusetts customers from being burdened by repeated charges that they do not want. This legislation will be in line with regulations issued by Attorney General Andrea Campbell.
“High costs don’t only come from inflation. We’re getting hit from all sides,” said Governor Healey. “Here’s one: we’re all using streaming services and apps. I don’t know if you’re like me – I look at my bank statement and it’s $2.99 here, $5.99 there, another $11.99 there. It adds up! They make it so easy to sign up, but nearly impossible to cancel. I say cancelling a subscription should be just as easy as signing up for it. Let’s make that a law in Massachusetts. AG Campbell has done great work on the regulations. We’re going to build on that.”
Governor Healey also said that her administration is looking at all the fees and charges that hit people at every turn, from government as well as business, to identify additional ways to cut costs and reduce burdens.
