Boston — Today, speaking at the New England Canada Business Council Executive Energy Conference, Governor Maura Healey called on President Donald Trump to lift his tariffs on Canadian products that are increasing the cost of housing and energy in the United States.
These include tariffs on lumber, steel, aluminum, copper, transformers, grid components, solar and wind components, and more.
“This week, President Trump finally admitted what we all know – that his tariffs are raising costs. It’s why he lifted his tariffs on beef and coffee and more to reduce the price of groceries,” said Governor Healey. “Now, he needs to focus on energy and housing. By ending his Canadian tariffs on lumber, steel and aluminum, he can undo some of the damage he has done. He should immediately lift these tariffs to lower the costs of housing and energy – the American people can’t afford for him to wait.”
Canada is Massachusetts’ top trading partner. Massachusetts and Canada exchange more than $16 billion in goods and services every year in two-way trade. Hundreds of companies are investing, developing products, and employing workers in good jobs across Massachusetts and Canada’s borders.
Governor Healey has been committed to strengthening the partnership between Massachusetts and Canada, especially when it comes to energy. Earlier this year, she hosted northeastern U.S. Governors and Canadian Premiers at the Massachusetts State House to discuss their commitment to strengthening trade and economic relations. Last year, Massachusetts hosted the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers (NEG-ECP) to discuss coordinated efforts on shared economic, energy and environmental priorities. During the meeting, the Governors and Premiers reconvened the Northeast International Committee on Energy to accelerate collaborative planning on energy policy.
