Boston — Today, the Trump Administration announced the termination of federal funding for 223 energy projects, totaling $7.5 billion nationally and approximately $466 million in Massachusetts.
“President Trump is further weaponizing his government shutdown to cost people jobs and hurt our economy,” said Governor Maura Healey. “Today, he’s cutting nearly half a billion dollars for our businesses, universities and non-profits that are working on cutting-edge technologies to lower energy costs, create good jobs and build a more reliable grid. All of our residents will be harmed by this vindictive action. We need the Trump Administration to restore this funding and reopen our government.”
The vast majority of the funding is directed at private companies, universities and nonprofits working on cutting-edge research and product development, including battery technology and grid reliability. Awardees include University of Massachusetts Amherst and National Grid.
These cuts undermine efforts to lower energy prices. Impacted projects were focused on bringing new energy supply into the grid, which is needed to lower costs. According to DOE’s own website, distributed energy resources and grid modernization – core components of National Grid’s federally funded Future Grid Project – can significantly lower costs for families and businesses.
These cuts to Massachusetts will also affect subgrantees and company partners in other states like Ohio, Georgia and Texas. It also will hurt the United States' competitiveness in hydrogen and conductive material technologies, giving more leverage to China and other countries.
