Boston — Governor Maura Healey issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling that President Donald Trump’s tariffs are illegal:

“The Supreme Court has confirmed what we’ve known all along – President Trump does not have the authority to implement these harmful and costly tariffs. But this isn’t simply an abuse of power. For a year now, President Trump’s tariffs have increased costs on every American and every business. His chaotic approach has caused instability in our economy, undermined business confidence, and weakened the United States’ standing on the world stage. So, while this is a welcome development, the damage has already been done.

“While President Trump seems to think he has ‘won’ on affordability, we all know that is not the reality. People and businesses across the country are struggling with high costs, and President Trump is just making everything worse. And he doesn't seem to care.

“In Massachusetts, I'm going to keep working hard every day to lower the cost of housing, energy and health care. I'm going to keep partnering with other countries, like Canada and Denmark, to recruit foreign investment and businesses to our state and grow our economy. And when the Trump Administration inevitably challenges this ruling, we will continue to oppose these tariffs in the strongest possible terms.”
