East Boston Probation and Court Staff with Winthrop residents

East Boston Probation and Court staff met with a group of Winthrop residents at the invitation of the Winthrop Civilian Police Academy last month. Among the East Boston Court staff who presented were Chief Probation Officer Matt McDonough, Assistant District Attorney Amanda Taylor, and Assistant Clerk Magistrate Ariel Madaro.

Chief Probation Officer McDonough shared information on Specialty Court services, diversion for appropriate offenders, treatment programs for defendants/probationers, Victim Services, and the Section 35 process.

"It's important to connect with the public outside of the courthouse," he said. "Through the Academy, citizens are able to ask questions and gain a greater understanding of law enforcement and available services. The East Boston Probation Department collaborates with a variety of allied services. Connecting at-risk individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues can significantly improve public safety."

The Winthrop Civilian Police Academy is run by Winthrop Police Lieutenant Steven Rogers. The Academy has offered sessions on domestic violence, motor vehicle laws, firearm safety, critical incidents, implicit bias, juvenile laws and narcotics enforcement.
