Salem, Massachusetts — A 58-year-old Lawrence man pleaded guilty to second degree murder and unarmed burglary today in Salem Superior Court. Judge John Lu sentenced him to 20 years to life in state prison with the possibility of parole.
Had the case gone to trial, Essex Assistant District Attorney Jessica Strasnick would have introduced evidence that would have proven that Jose Picart broke into the home of his former girlfriend at 63 Myrtle Street in Lawrence on the evening of August 14, 2014 and stabbed John Paschal, 47, in the head with a screwdriver while he was asleep. Mr. Paschal was transported to Beth Israel Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Mr. Paschal was dating the defendant’s former girlfriend and had two sons who were 10 and 16 at the time of his death.
“This senseless and unprovoked act of violence has left two boys without a father,” District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. “While nothing can bring their father back, I hope this sentence brings a sense of peace knowing that the man who killed their father is being held accountable.”
ADA Strasnick praised the work of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Steve Buccheri and Lawrence Police Detective Kevin Nigohosian for their work on the investigation. Essex Victim Witness Advocate Jennifer Capone provided support and assistance to the victims.
Picart was represented by Attorney Joseph Collins.
