Worcester — Today, the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) proudly announces the graduation of 63 recruits from the 337th Recruit Training Academy. Throughout the intensive 12-week program, these graduates developed the skills and knowledge required to serve as Correction Officers and Correction Program Officers across the DOC’s facilities statewide.

“We are proud to welcome the next generation of dedicated professionals to our DOC team. The Department continues to be a national leader in reducing recidivism and developing innovative programming, and these graduates will help us advance that work,” said DOC Commissioner Shawn Jenkins. “The Training Academy has prepared our graduates with the training, values, and resilience needed to support public safety and uphold our mission of rehabilitation and reintegration.”

"Today marks the beginning of a meaningful career in public service for our graduates,” said Janice Perez, Director of Staff Development and Diversity & Equal Employment Opportunity. “They have shown the readiness and resolve it takes to thrive in this profession, and I am confident they will contribute meaningfully to the DOC’s mission of fostering safer communities and supporting positive outcomes for those in our care.”

The graduation ceremony was held on July 25, 2025 at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. The recruits took their oath and received their badges, and were addressed by Vermont Department of Corrections Commissioner Nicholas J. Deml.

The 46 newly graduated Correction Officers’ roles will include patrolling facilities, monitoring the housed population, supervising visitation, conducting contraband searches, and educating individuals about rehabilitative and educational opportunities. The 17 new Correction Program Officers will support reentry planning and classification procedures, as well as perform patrol, supervision, and investigations as assigned to support the operation of facilities.

The 12-week academy curriculum provides recruits with advanced training in security protocols, defensive tactics, effective communication, security inspections, and de-escalation strategies. Recruits also had the opportunity to tour DOC facilities to gain a firsthand understanding of their future work environments. Additionally, the academy program introduced recruits to health and wellness resources, including the department’s Struggle Well program, to promote resilience and support their well-being throughout their careers.

The DOC is actively recruiting motivated individuals to join its dedicated team. The DOC offers competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, ongoing professional development, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Applicants aged 19 are now welcome to apply. Individuals interested in pursuing a rewarding career in corrections are encouraged to call 1-866-WRK-4DOC, email DOC-Recrutiment@mass.gov, or visit the Department's website for more information on career opportunities and upcoming academy classes.
