WORCESTER — Today, the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) proudly announces the graduation of 81 recruits from the 339th Recruit Training Academy. Throughout the intensive 12-week program, these graduates developed the skills and knowledge required to serve as Correction Officers and Correctional Program Officers across the DOC’s facilities statewide.

This year’s graduating class enters the Department at a pivotal time, as the DOC advances its newly launched strategic plan, the Align Initiative — a five-year commitment to safer facilities, stronger operations, and improved outcomes.

“Today marks a proud milestone that reflects the discipline, resilience, and commitment these graduates demonstrated throughout the academy,” said Public Safety and Security Secretary Gina Kwon. “I congratulate each of them on this achievement and thank them for answering the call to public service, work that plays a vital role in strengthening public safety and supporting safer communities across Massachusetts.”

I’m confident our newest officers will serve with the utmost professionalism and integrity.”

The graduation ceremony was held on April 3, 2026, at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. The recruits took their oath and received their badges.

The 67 newly graduated Correction Officers’ roles will include monitoring the housed population, supervising visitation, conducting contraband searches, and educating individuals about rehabilitative and educational opportunities. The 14 new Correctional Program Officers will support reentry planning and classification procedures, as well as perform patrol, supervision, and investigations as assigned to support the operation of facilities.

The 12-week academy curriculum provides recruits with advanced training in security protocols, defensive tactics, effective communication, security inspections, and de-escalation strategies. Recruits also had the opportunity to tour DOC facilities to gain a firsthand understanding of their future work environments. Additionally, the academy program introduced recruits to health and wellness resources, including the department’s Struggle Well program, to promote resilience and support their well-being throughout their careers.

The DOC also offers an Academy Readiness Program, a voluntary program designed to prepare candidates for entry into the Recruit Training Class (RTC), and careers as successful officers. This program helps bridge the gap between the civil service exam, onboarding process and the start of Recruit Training Class by introducing participants to the Department’s structure, culture, expectations, and the roles and responsibilities of recruits, Correction Officers and staff.
