BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and Fundación MAPFRE today announced that Bishop Feehan High School senior Ollie Guglielmi was selected as the winner of the third annual Look Both Ways Road Safety PSA Contest. Students from Dighton-Rehoboth, Ludlow, Northbridge and Quincy were also recognized as finalists.

High school students statewide were invited to create a script for a public service announcement to reach their peers with important road safety messages. Bishop Feehan broadcast teacher Jessica Strunin and Ollie Guglielmi worked with Boston-based creative agency CTP to produce the winning spot. Bishop Feehan also received $3,000 for road safety education, provided by Fundación MAPFRE.

The winning submission can be found here.

“Each year, MassDOT and MAPFRE receive an incredible range of creative, thoughtful submissions from high school students who understand the importance of road safety,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt. “Public education plays a vital role in shaping the habits of the next generation of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians — and this year’s winning entry from Bishop Feehan High School is a powerful reminder that students can be leaders in creating safer roads for everyone.”

“I am always impressed by the range of creative ideas we receive as part of this contest,” said Chief Representative of Fundación MAPFRE in the United States and CEO of MAPFRE USA Jaime Tamayo. “This initiative with MassDOT reflects our shared commitment to promoting road safety and saving lives throughout Massachusetts. We are proud to support and amplify the young voices that are helping to shape a culture of responsibility and awareness behind the wheel.”

The Look Both Ways program aims to eliminate road-related fatalities and serious injury through the messages delivered by the PSA contest and through a virtual reality driving simulation experience, the React Challenge, that tests a user’s safe driving ability when faced with distractions behind the wheel.

About Fundación MAPFRE’s Road Safety Initiative: Fundación MAPFRE, a global non-profit based in Madrid, Spain, with North American headquarters in Webster, Massachusetts, aims to promote the well-being of society and citizens. Prevention and Road Safety is an action area to which the foundation is dedicated. It believes that if the Vision Zero movement in 1997 led to a revolution in our understanding of Road Safety, the current goal should be to reach the point where there are no fatalities or people injured in traffic crashes.
