The July 4th weekend is nearly here, and many are looking forward to a weekend of summer fun and festivities. Fireworks, barbeques, beach days – we are lucky to have great options here in Massachusetts and New England! Increased travel plans due to community events and time with family and friends will mean more vehicle traffic to plan for as we celebrate our independence.

Take the time to plan your routes and transportation options ahead of time to account for increased holiday weekend traffic and make a safe driving plan. Consider taking public transportation to big events. Make sure to choose a designated driver in advance or book a ride-share if you think you might be impaired. Remember, if you feel different, you drive different.

With outdoor activities and celebrations, be a vigilant pedestrian and passenger as well. Watch out for increased motor vehicle traffic while biking or walking and cross at appropriate crosswalks. Be sure you can be seen in the dark with reflective gear or a flashlight. As a passenger in a vehicle, assist your driver with directions and always support safe driving.

Summertime is a time to get road work done, as there is no perpetual vacation from repairing and improving roadways. So make sure to watch for signs and be aware of road construction and reduce speeds as you pass work zones. By avoiding distractions, following speed limits and road rules, packing your patience in addition to your suitcase, we can all enjoy better traffic flow and celebrate America responsibly and safely.

The MAPFRE Insurance-sponsored MassDOT Highway Assistance Program is on patrol to help all motorists, including motorcyclists, on the highways. Patrol operators monitor some of the state’s busiest highways around Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Cape Cod (seasonal). The Highway Assistance Patrol covers 13 major state roadways and interstates; the Emergency Service Patrol covers the Mass Pike (I-90) from New York to Boston, and the Incident Response Operators cover the Metropolitan Highway System and tunnels. The Highway Assistance Patrol is in service Monday–Friday between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. During holidays, there are extended routes in heavy-traffic areas. On I-90 and in Boston’s tunnel system, assistance is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
