BOSTON — Summer is at its peak, and just like we want summer to slow down, take it as a motto to slow down as well. The summer weather means lots of activities and travel, as well as changes in traffic patterns for vacation destinations, special event traffic, and road construction projects. Keep alert and plan your trips. Be prepared for unexpected bottlenecks due to incidents and construction projects.
Mapfre and MassDOT remind drivers of the importance of slowing down and moving over for emergency vehicles and road construction. Massachusetts' "Move Over" law requires all drivers approaching stationary emergency, highway maintenance, utility, or tow vehicles with flashing lights to move to the next adjacent lane if it is safe to do so. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers must proceed with caution and reduce their speed significantly.
One special event that took place recently is the Pan-Mass Challenge, which raised nearly $64 million this year alone. The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is a Massachusetts-based bike-a-thon and the biggest athletic fundraising event in the country. Always held on the first weekend in August, the Pan-Mass Challenge raises funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a world leader in adult and pediatric cancer treatment and research.
Mapfre Insurance is proud to be a sponsor of this important event and of the MassDOT Highway Assistance Program. Corporate sponsors make it possible for the PMC to pass through 100% of every dollar raised by riders. Over One Billion dollars has been raised by the PMC since its start in 1980.
The Mapfre Insurance-sponsored MassDOT Highway Assistance Program is on patrol to help all motorists, including motorcyclists, on the highways. Patrol operators monitor some of the state’s busiest highways around Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Cape Cod (seasonal). The Highway Assistance Patrol covers 13 major state roadways and interstates, the Emergency Service Patrol covers the Mass Pike (I-90) from New York to Boston and the Incident Response Operators cover the Metropolitan Highway System and tunnels. The Highway Assistance Patrol is in service Monday–Friday between 6 a.m.–10 a.m. and 3 p.m.–7 p.m. During holidays, there are extended routes in heavy-traffic areas. On I-90, and in Boston’s tunnel system, assistance is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
