As the nation celebrates America's 250th birthday, residents and visitors across Massachusetts can look forward to a summer filled with historic events, fireworks, concerts, sporting events, and family activities. With large crowds expected throughout the region, planning ahead and prioritizing safety will help ensure everyone enjoys the celebrations safely and responsibly.

This July will be especially busy as major America250 events attract both local residents and visitors from across the country. Travelers should expect increased traffic, road closures, parking restrictions, and crowded transit stations. Before heading out, check event and transportation updates, allow extra travel time, and consider alternatives such as the MBTA, commuter rail, ferries, or water shuttles to avoid congestion.

Once you arrive at your destination, remain alert and patient. Large events create busy roadways, parking lots, and pedestrian areas where drivers and pedestrians must work together to stay safe. Crossing streets in unfamiliar locations, navigating crowded parking areas, and traveling after dark can increase risks for everyone. Whether you're behind the wheel or on foot, staying attentive and following traffic laws can help prevent crashes and injuries.

Safe celebrations also begin with responsible driving. Never drive impaired by alcohol, cannabis, medications, or any other substance that can affect your ability to operate a vehicle safely. Avoid distractions and stay focused on the road. If you're traveling to an unfamiliar destination, have a passenger assist with navigation whenever possible rather than attempting to manage directions while driving.

Sail Boston Returns to Boston Harbor

One of the summer's signature events will be Sail Boston 2026, part of the national Sail250 celebration commemorating America's 250th anniversary. From July 11 through July 16, majestic tall ships from around the world are expected to fill Boston Harbor, creating a spectacular waterfront experience for visitors of all ages.

For many New England residents, Sail Boston brings back memories of previous tall ship gatherings. The most recent event in 2017 attracted more than three million visitors, making it one of the largest waterfront celebrations in Boston's history. Organizers anticipate that this year's Sail250 events could draw even larger crowds as part of the nationwide celebration.

Public ship tours, harbor festivals, educational programs, and waterfront activities will attract significant numbers of visitors throughout the week. Because many events will be concentrated along the city's waterfront, public transportation may be the most convenient way to attend. The MBTA, commuter rail, ferries, and water shuttles can help visitors avoid parking challenges and navigate around anticipated road closures and congestion.

A Summer Filled with Major Events

Sail Boston is only one part of an exceptionally busy summer season. Across Greater Boston and throughout Massachusetts, America250 celebrations will coincide with sporting events, concerts, beach travel, airport traffic, and everyday commuting.

Events of this scale affect more than just those attending. Increased traffic volumes, crowded transit stations, and limited parking can impact commuters, local residents, and travelers throughout the region. A family heading into the city for a ballgame, a visitor planning a waterfront excursion, or someone simply traveling through the area may all encounter heavier-than-normal traffic and longer travel times.

By planning ahead, using available transportation options, and remaining patient and attentive, everyone can help keep Massachusetts moving safely throughout this historic summer season.

As you celebrate America's 250th birthday, remember that arriving safely is just as important as reaching the destination. Slow down, stay focused, watch for pedestrians, and make responsible choices behind the wheel so that everyone can enjoy these once-in-a-generation events safely.

Keep up to date on special events and don’t miss out on the fun!

The Mapfre Insurance-sponsored MassDOT Highway Assistance Program is on patrol to help all motorists, including motorcyclists, on the highways. Patrol operators monitor some of the state’s busiest highways around Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Cape Cod (seasonal). The Highway Assistance Patrol covers 13 major state roadways and interstates, the Emergency Service Patrol covers the Mass Pike (I-90) from New York to Boston and the Incident Response Operators cover the Metropolitan Highway System and tunnels. The Highway Assistance Patrol is in service Monday–Friday between 6 a.m.–10 a.m. and 3 p.m.–7 p.m. During holidays, there are extended routes in heavy-traffic areas. On I-90, and in Boston’s tunnel system, assistance is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.
