August is National Traffic Awareness Month! Practicing safe driving and being aware of your surroundings when behind the wheel help avoid vehicle crashes. No one wants to experience a vehicle crash. With proper care and attention to traffic conditions, motorists can reduce their chances of experiencing the consequences of traffic accidents.
Here are some reminders as you are navigating the roads:
- Pay attention to speed limits.
- Check your blind spots.
- Stay alert to changing conditions including road construction activity.
- Be aware of long stopping distances of large trucks and buses.
- Merge and pass safely – use your turn signals.
- Buckle up every time.
By doing your best to follow safety rules and speed limits, drivers can keep traffic flowing and avoid the costs of vehicle crashes. So, this August, pledge to renew your attention to all traffic safety rules.
There are informational highway signs indicating routes patrolled by the MassDOT Highway Assistance Program sponsored by MAPFRE Insurance. Being assured help is nearby if needed is another beneficial aspect of situational awareness.
The MAPFRE Insurance-sponsored MassDOT Highway Assistance Program is on patrol to help all motorists, including motorcyclists, on the highways. Patrol operators monitor some of the state’s busiest highways around Metro Boston, Worcester, Springfield, and Cape Cod (seasonal). The Highway Assistance Patrol covers 13 major state roadways and interstates, the Emergency Service Patrol covers the Mass Pike (I-90) from New York to Boston and the Incident Response Operators cover the Metropolitan Highway System and tunnels. The Highway Assistance Patrol is in service Monday–Friday between 6 a.m.–10 a.m. and 3 p.m.–7 p.m. During holidays, there are extended routes in heavy-traffic areas. On I-90, and in Boston’s tunnel system, assistance is provided 24 hours, 7 days a week.
