Media Contact for Middleborough Historic Site Receives Spring Spruce-Up as Part of Probation's Statewide Earth Day Clean-up
Coria Holland, Communications Director
The Earth Day Clean-up by crew members of the Massachusetts Trial Court's Community Service Program, a Massachusetts Probation Service (MPS) initiative, included cleaning and landscaping the historic Wapanucket Cemetery in Middleborough. The cemetery - established in the 1800's - is the grave site of veterans of the War of 1812 and the Civil War, according to the Friends of Middleborough Cemeteries. The cemetery is one of 12 sites in 10 counties that were spruced up by probationers or Justice-involved individuals in the program's first Earth Day clean-up and beautification efforts since the Pandemic. Probationers and justice-involved individuals perform community service in lieu of paying court costs. The Wampanucket site, in proximity to the cemetery, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and described as containing evidence of human habitation dating back to 12,000 years ago.
