The backpacks contained items such as crayons, markers, glue sticks, reusable water bottles, folders, tissues, and hand sanitizer for kindergartners. Middle and high school students were provided with pens, pencils, sticky notes, index cards, binders, rulers, erasers, tissues, hand sanitizer and reusable water bottles.
This effort was led by Associate Probation Officer (APO) Keri Mendez and Probation Officer Manager (POM) Christine Monteiro who conceived of the idea.
"This initiative underscores the department’s dedication to supporting educational success and equipping children with the resources they need to excel in their academic pursuits," said New Bedford District Chief Probation Officer Donald Chausse.
Chief Chausse added, "Our mission extends beyond the courthouse. By investing in our community, we are fostering a supportive environment that promotes educational achievement and personal growth. We are grateful for the support from the New Bedford Bar Association, Lakeville Worship Center, and the dedicated efforts of the New Bedford District Court Probation Department, particularly APO Keri Mendez and POM Christine Monteiro, in making this project a success.”
APO Mendez and POM Christine Monteiro stated, “A backpack is more than just a bag—it’s a tool that empowers a child to reach their full potential. By donating a backpack, you’re providing a child with the confidence and resources they need to succeed in school and beyond.”
The Back-to-School Backpack effort is the second community engagement effort offered by the court. New Bedford Probation also hosted a community block party that drew more than 200 attendees and featured a local radio personality who served as DJ. Community engagement is a top priority of Probation Commissioner Pamerson Ifill and his Executive Leadership Team.
