Media Contact for Norfolk Juvenile Court staff celebrates Cinco De Mayo
Coria Holland, Communications Director
Cinco De Mayo, Spanish for “Fifth of May,” is an annual celebration on May 5 which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 which was led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. The victory of a “smaller, poorly equipped” Mexican force against the larger and better-armed French army served as a morale boost for the Mexican troops.
“I thought it would be nice to bring staff together for a small celebration, allowing us to eat, play some diverse music, and have an opportunity to educate ourselves about what the day is truly about,” said Ms. DaRoza, who is also a Cultural Proficiency Champion, often referred to as “Champions.”
There are more than 300 Champions who are Massachusetts Court system employees whose responsibilities include participating in cultural diversity trainings, engaging and helping to facilitate conversations on race and racial justice at the courts, offices, and Community Justice Support Centers as well as assisting with the planning of Cultural Appreciation Week (CAW) events. This year will mark the 7th annual CAW celebration which will be held October 24-28, 2022.
