The Northern Berkshire District Court, Berkshire Juvenile Court, and the Pittsfield Community Justice Support Center have joined forces to conduct a week-long food drive during the Massachusetts Trial Court's 8th Annual Cultural Appreciation Week, October 21st-25th. The drive will benefit the Al Nelson Friendship Center in North Adams. The Northern Berkshire District Court will serve as a "Signature Court," on Thursday, October 24th. The Signature Courts are designated court and Community Justice Support sites that are visited by court and community leaders.
Collection boxes have been set up at Northern Berkshire District Court, 111 Holden Street, in North Adams. Court-users, court employees, and members of the general public are welcome to participate by dropping off non-perishable food items.
“The courts and probation are part of the community and as neighbors we want to make sure that we address the needs of people living here. Coordinating this food drive is something we we wanted to do to give back and help those who are food insecure,” said Chief Donald Wright.
The following is a list of the most needed items:
- Ground regular coffee
- Vegetable stock
- Canned Black Beans
- 64 oz. juice
- Biscuit mix
- Chicken stock
- Canned Kidney beans
- Olive oil
- Beef stock
- Lemon juice
- Diced tomatoes
- Canned Chickpeas
Gift cards and certificates may be dropped off to the Probation Department.
“The Al Nelson Friendship Center is described on its website as the "Northern Berkshire Interfaith Action Initiative" and an all-volunteer grassroots organization established in 2010. It describes its goal as "providing a safety net to those in need in 'our communities' with openness, friendliness, and most importantly, dignity and respect." The food pantry, a member of the Western Massachusetts Food Bank, is the center's "main program."
