LOWELL — One person died and another was seriously injured after a fire in a Lowell apartment, said Lowell Fire Chief Philip A.J. Charron, Lowell Police Chief Greg Hudon, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian T. Ryan, and State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine.
The Lowell Fire Department responded to 144 Appleton Street at about 9:10 pm following a central station alarm activation. On arrival, they found heavy smoke coming from the front of the building and one person seriously injured outside. That person was transported for medical care.
Firefighters learned that another occupant remained inside and immediately made entry to locate that person. They found the occupant unresponsive inside and attempted lifesaving efforts but the person was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a formal identification procedure and determine the cause and manner of death.
All other residents of the multifamily home escaped safely. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the unit of origin and had it under control in about 40 minutes.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lowell Fire Department, Lowell Police Department, State Police assigned to the Middlesex DA’s office, and State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office.
