Lynn, Massachusetts — DANIEL LEAL ORTEGA, AGE 40, of Lynn, was arraigned in Lynn District Court today on a charge of operating without a license following a crash last night in Saugus that fatally injured a three-year-old Lynn boy.  Judge James Wexler ordered him held on $1000 cash bail.  Essex Assistant District Attorney Jacquelyn Kaplan requested $5,000 cash bail, citing an open immigration detainer on the defendant and his failure to appear on the same charge in 2005 out of Danvers.

The defendant is represented by Attorney Michael Dunphy.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Saugus Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.  Until that investigation is complete, no further information will be released.
