Boston — Governor Maura Healey issued the following statement on President Trump’s recent executive order titled “Ensuring Citizenship and Integrity in Federal Elections,” which includes new restrictions on mail-in voting:
“Let’s call this what this is — President Trump is escalating his campaign to deny Americans their constitutional right to vote under the guise of baseless claims of election fraud. Here in Massachusetts, we run safe, secure and accessible elections. Vote-by-mail is a critical component of that. It works, and it is a good thing.
President Trump’s executive order is a clear attempt to interfere with state’s authority to run our elections, and it is intended to make it harder for eligible Americans to vote. This is not how our democracy is supposed to work.
We are reviewing this order closely and will work closely with Secretary Galvin and Attorney General Campbell to protect our elections, defend our laws, and make sure every eligible voter in Massachusetts can make their voice heard and have their ballot counted.”
