Press Release  Supreme Judicial Court Justice David A. Lowy to Retire

BOSTON, MA — Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Justice David A. Lowy has advised Governor Maura Healey that he will retire from the Court on February 3, 2024. Appointed by Governor Charlie Baker, Justice Lowy was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court on August 24, 2016.

"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as a judge in this Commonwealth for twenty-six years, more than seven of them as a Justice on our state’s highest court. I have tried every day to approach each case impartially, without fear or favor,” said Justice Lowy. “I am tremendously grateful to my colleagues on the Supreme Judicial Court for their commitment to justice, collegiality, and friendship.”

Justice Lowy earned a B.A., cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1983, and graduated magna cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 1987.

Following law school, Justice Lowy became an associate in the Litigation Department of Goodwin, Procter & Hoar from 1987 to 1988 and from 1989 to 1990, leaving for a yearlong stint to work as a law clerk to Judge Edward F. Harrington in the U.S. District Court. From 1992 to 1997, he served as an assistant district attorney in Essex and Suffolk Counties, and from 1992 to 1995, served as Deputy Legal Counsel to Governor William F. Weld.

Justice Lowy was first appointed to the bench in 1997 as a District Court Judge. In 2001, Governor Paul Cellucci appointed him to the Superior Court bench. Justice Lowy served for six years as Regional Administrative Judge for Essex Superior Court.

Justice Lowy served as an original member of the Supreme Judicial Court Advisory Committee on Massachusetts Evidence Law; the committee’s work resulted in publication of the Massachusetts Guide to Evidence in 2008, with Justice Lowy serving as an Editor from 2008-2016.

Justice Lowy is a co-chair of the Supreme Judicial Court Judiciary-Media Committee and serves as chair of the Supreme Judicial Court Standing Committee on Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health.

Justice Lowy's teaching positions include adjunct professorships at New England School of Law | Boston (1991- present); Suffolk University Law School (1995-2005), and Boston University School of Law (2006 - present), where he teaches courses in evidence.
