Brockton — Before a crowd of students, family, friends, supporters, and local elected officials, Suzanne M. Bump was sworn in today as State Auditor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Governor Deval Patrick administered the oath of office at Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton, Bump’s alma mater.

Acknowledging the warm applause, Bump said, “We all have legitimate questions about whether and how effectively government is meeting the public’s needs. I intend to use the knowledge and leadership skills I have gained over decades of public service to make our government work better.” Bump emphasized, “Making government work better. That will be my priority as your State Auditor.

Bump choose Cardinal Spellman as the venue of her swearing in ceremony to pay tribute to her upbringing as a South Shore native and to demonstrate how Beacon Hill may be the location of her office but the entire state is where she will conduct her business as the State Auditor.

“I came home to Cardinal Spellman High School because I want to honor those dedicated teachers and administrators who nurtured my intellectual development and instilled the social values which have brought me to this day and to one of the highest offices in state government,” said Bump. “As I am today, I will be found often in communities across the state, listening as well as speaking, in order to carry on the public dialogue that is essential to self-governance.”

The ceremony featured Brockton State Senator and fellow Cardinal Spellman graduate, Thomas P. Kennedy, who acted as Master of Ceremonies and Mayor of Brockton, Linda Balzotti, who delivered the Certificate of Election on behalf of the Secretary of State, William Galvin.

Prior to her election in 2010, Bump was a member of the House of Representatives, serving for eight years in the Legislature on the Commerce and Labor Committee, including two as Chairman, and as Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development under Governor L. Patrick from 2007 through 2009. Bump lives in Great Barrington with her husband Paul McDevitt. They have two married sons and a grandson. Raised in Whitman, Bump graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School with the class of 1973 and earned an A.B. in English from Boston College and a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.
