Salem, Massachusetts — A Swampscott woman, accused of running her ex-husband’s girlfriend over with a car, pleaded guilty today in Salem Superior Court.  Judge Howard Whitehead sentenced her to two-and-a-half to three years in state prison followed by five years of probation during which she must seek inpatient mental health treatment, stay away and have no contact with the victim and abide by restraining orders.

Kimberly Ann English, 50, Swampscott, pleaded guilty to armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and violating a restraining order.

Essex Assistant District Attorney John Brennan recommended an eight to ten year sentence followed by 5 years of probation.  He argued that this was “a horrific experience for the victim to deal with physically for the rest of her life as well as emotionally.”  The victim sustained a severely broken leg which required multiple surgeries, ongoing physical therapy, and will likely cause her pain for the rest of her life.

Had the case gone to trial, ADA Brennan would have introduced evidence that would have proven that on September 10, 2013, the defendant drove her vehicle onto the sidewalk and into the front yard of her ex-husband’s home at 17 Magnolia Road in Swampscott, struck the victim and drove away.  At the time, her ex-husband had an active restraining order against the defendant on behalf of his children.

The defendant was represented by Attorney Matthew Hemond.
