Skip this video Probation Supervision Week 2025.Today, the Massachusetts Probation Service (MPS)—the first Probation Service in the nation—kicks off its observance of Pretrial and Probation Supervision Week 2025 joining the more than 90,000 community corrections officers across the country in celebrating Probation employees, their work, and mission to help improve the lives of court-involved individuals, their families, and communities.
The American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) organizes national PPPS Week and this year’s theme is “Heroes Behind the Mission: Transforming Lives, Enhancing Public Safety.”
MPS was credited in a Boston Foundation study for its role in helping to significantly reduce the state’s crime rate while sending the fewest number of individuals—less than one percent—to jail in the country.
Probation supervises more than 40,000 individuals in the eight Boston Municipal Courts (BMC), 62 District, 12 Superior, and 11 Juvenile courts across the Commonwealth and goes beyond supervision. Probation also assists families in the 12 Probate & Family courts.
Probation provides transitional housing and sober beds, transportation, job training and placement. Probation has also hosted numerous charitable—food and supply and shoe and sneaker drives—as well as community engagement events, job and resource fairs in cities and towns throughout the state.
MPS also assists victims and survivors of crime through its Victim Services Unit which provides court accompaniment and notification of upcoming hearings. Probation manages 18 Community Justice Support Centers which offer case management, counseling, drug and alcohol testing, job training and placement and more for high-risk offenders.
This year, Probation is inviting qualified individuals to join the ranks by registering to take the Probation Officer exam. Exam registration ends August 29, 2025. The exam period runs from September 15- October 3. Details may be found on Mass.gov.
